Woman with Shamasen
|
Kurt
Joachim von Behrmann
Title: Woman with A Shamasen Date: 2000 Medium: technical pen on bristol vellum Size: 12 by 17 inches Please note that this work is framed and ready to be displayed. Description: Pen and ink drawings have always been a favorite medium for me. In this work I wanted to create a more complex image using text, landscape and the very traditional Japanese symbol the Geisha. As my reading of Japanese culture continued, I learned that Geisha means Artist in Japanese. The whole world of Geisha, which has no counterpart in Western Culture, is a world where devote themselves totally to a life of continuing traditions and creating a carefully articulated image of themselves for the entertainment of men and for their own economic survival. It is a discreet world that truly defies any definition in the Western sense. For a commission, this drawing was recreated as a three feet by one and one half foot drawing. |
